Lawyer for ex-Rep. Rick Renzi urges new trialJune 17, 2014 @ 4:49 pm
SEATTLE (AP) -- A lawyer for Rick Renzi told a federal appellate court that the former Arizona congressman should to be acquitted or receive a new trial.
A three-judge panel in Seattle heard arguments Tuesday in Renzi's appeal of his convictions on public corruption and money laundering charges.
A federal jury in Arizona convicted Renzi in June 2013. He was sentenced in December to three years in prison. Renzi is free on bail pending his appeal.
Renzi's lawyer, Dan Himmelfarb, says the government presented insufficient evidence. A lawyer for the federal government disagreed.
Renzi, a Republican, represented Arizona's 1st Congressional District from 2003 to 2009.
He didn't run for re-election in 2008 while facing federal charges accusing him of looting a family insurance business to help pay for his 2002 campaign.
