Man drives stolen car into water, presumed drowned

SEATTLE (AP) -- Divers have recovered the body of a man who drove a stolen car off a dock and into the water.

Seattle police say divers found the body Thursday morning near where the car went under in the Ship Canal.

Police and fire rescue teams were called to the Ship Canal late Wednesday night after receiving reports that a Nissan Sentra had driven off a pier. Authorities say they saw a man in the water, calling for help. However the man refused to grab a rope that was repeatedly thrown to him and pushed an officer away who tried to rescue him.

Police believe he was driving a car that was stolen Monday.

The man's body was transferred to the King County Medical Examiner's office.
