The Seattle high school football player hospitalized over the weekend for a hard hit has died.

A spokesperson with Harborview Medical Center confirmed that Kenny Bui passed away shortly before noon, Monday.

Highline Public Schools spokesperson Catherine Carbone Rogers reported that Bui was injured in a Friday homecoming game and was taken to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center where he underwent surgery and remained in critical condition over the weekend.

Bui was a senior and played wide receiver and defensive back positions at Evergreen High School. The injury occurred at Highline Memorial Field during the fourth quarter of the game.

The exact nature of the injury is unknown.

“He had been injured in the fourth quarter in what has been described as a tackle, a hard hit on the field,” KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson reported.

Monson said that Bui’s family is adamantly requesting privacy during this difficult time.

On Monday, the school district had brought in counselors for students and staff prior to knowledge of Bui’s death.

“Right now we are just concentrating on supporting the family, the students and the staff who are going through a really difficult time right now,” Rogers told KIRO Radio.

“We have a crisis team with social workers and counselors that we deploy in whatever school needs extra support,” she said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
