Tacoma man gets 38 years for killing ex-girlfriend

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A Tacoma man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death while their daughter held a slumber party in the next room has been sentenced to 38 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Alphonso Albert Bell stabbed Georgia Gunzer at least 20 times in the bedroom of her apartment in January 2011. Court records show their daughter and some friends were asleep in the living room at the time.
Bell pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder. Pierce County Superior Court Judge James Orland sentenced him Friday.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reports ( http://bit.ly/Axo9JK) that Gunzer had petitioned for a protection order against Bell three months before her death, but a court officer refused because Gunzer had visited Bell in jail at least six times.
