Wash. proposal bans minors from indoor tan beds
Originally published: Feb 4, 2012 - 3:06 pm
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A state Senate panel has approved a measure that would prohibit the use of indoor tanning beds by anyone under 18.
The Seattle Times says ( http://bit.ly/wXRiHQ) Washington currently has no age restrictions on indoor tanning beds. Some tanning salons require parental consent for children but they are not required to do so by law. Salons would be expected to check IDs.
California last year became the first state to ban tanning beds for all minors because of concerns over possible health hazards such as melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Opponents of the bill say the government shouldn't be deciding whether teenagers should use tanning beds.
Senate Bill 6249 awaits a vote from the full Senate.
