1 bicyclist killed, 1 injured in Whatcom Co.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Patrol says a 57-year-old driver struck and killed one bicyclist and injured another in Whatcom County before leaving the scene.

The driver, 57-year-old Debra G. Peterson, was booked into Whatcom County Jail Sunday on investigation of hit and run.

The Bellingham Herald says ( http://is.gd/Ax3aFO) 38-year-old Steven Waterman and 51-year-old Daniel McKay were riding along Kendall Road Saturday about 8:15 p.m. when they were hit by a 1994 Ford Escort.

Waterman, from the Maple Falls area, died at the scene. McKay, also from the Maple Falls area, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

The patrol says the Escort driver, Peterson, stopped and checked on the bicyclists but then left the scene. She was later arrested.

    The driver must have been one of those liberal tree huggers that would swerve to avoid an animal but hit a human instead.

    If you look at the dates of the previous posts, you might understand the context a bit clearer!

    They were clearly commenting on a different article. Mynorthwest.com is well known for recycling comments that make no sense to the article...

    Death of a person is very sad moment and I do wish the best to all involved. With that said; the way cyclist ride on the road here in Snohomish Co. is totally un-acceptable and direct action needs to be taken to insure safety on our road. It’s time we start posting the roads that cannot accommodate cyclist as ‘No Bicycle’ zones and levy heavy fines on the violators so they get the message (say $350.00 for each infraction). Double the fine when it’s a pack of them! Many of the road here in Snohomish Co. are small 2 lane roads with no shoulder or space beyond the fog line, most have sharp drop offs at the edge and these conditions go for miles. These same road a major though affairs for commerce and to the farming communities. These are the type of roads that need to have a bicycle ban put on them sees that the bicyclist do not have sound judgment as to where they ride. There are many roads and trails that are bicycle friendly with most having provisions for bikes. For communities like the town of Snohomish, if they want the surrounding areas to be bicycle friendly, then they need to get their wallets and work crews out, the county is not going to do it for you, there is no budget and if there were there are more important road maintenance project that must be done. The Bicyclist also need to start obeying out laws and law enforcement need to start enforcing the law on bicyclist. Think before you go out on that next ride, use poor judgment and it may be your last ride.
