1 bicyclist killed, 1 injured in Whatcom Co.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Patrol says a 57-year-old driver struck and killed one bicyclist and injured another in Whatcom County before leaving the scene.

The driver, 57-year-old Debra G. Peterson, was booked into Whatcom County Jail Sunday on investigation of hit and run.

The Bellingham Herald says ( http://is.gd/Ax3aFO) 38-year-old Steven Waterman and 51-year-old Daniel McKay were riding along Kendall Road Saturday about 8:15 p.m. when they were hit by a 1994 Ford Escort.

Waterman, from the Maple Falls area, died at the scene. McKay, also from the Maple Falls area, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

The patrol says the Escort driver, Peterson, stopped and checked on the bicyclists but then left the scene. She was later arrested.

    or stay off the roads. we make expensive bike trails for a reason. can i drive my car or motorcycle on the sammamish river trail? no. so bikers should stay off of car roads.

    ...if roads were paid for exclusively by taxes related to automobiles. The truth is they are not and cyclists are helping to pay for the roads too whether they own a car or not.

    were riding at 8:15 (in the dark, probably rain too) and NOT wearing hemets. so which of the three lawbreakers is at fault? if one survived with no helmet the other one most likey would have also had he not been breaking the bicycle helmet law.
