Backer of broader gun checks not giving up fight

Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, speaks during the NRA Annual Meeting of Members at the National Rifle Association's 142 Annual Meetings and Exhibits in the George R. Brown Convention Center Saturday, May 4, 2013, in Houston. National Rifle Association leaders told members Saturday that the fight against gun control legislation is far from over, with battles yet to come in Congress and next year's midterm elections, but they vowed that none in the organization will ever have to surrender their weapons. WASHINGTON (AP) - One of the principal sponsors of defeated gun background check legislation says he isn't giving up on getting a bill passed.

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin says backers of expanded background checks for gun purchases must focus on "where the comfort zone is" with gun owners.

A bill Manchin co-sponsored with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania failed to clear the Senate last month. The National Rifle Association, which staunchly opposed the measure, celebrated its defeat at a convention in Houston.

Manchin tells "CBS This Morning" in an interview Tuesday that the NRA, of which he is a member, has been "rattling the cage" to stir up opposition to enhanced background checks. He says nothing in the legislation infringes on the 2nd Amendment rights of gun owners.

    Please stop Feeding CH
CH is full of blind rhetoric and rarely if every uses any sustainance to form an argument. It is almost always pure rehetoric/propaganda as with a few others I constantly see on here. I love reading many of these posts and see that there are a lot of passionate people on here who can make a valid argument using facts. Do not fall into the trap of arguing from emotion and name calling, it's not becoming of who we are as americans and Patriots. I can't stand CH's dribble but I will not lay down my gun, and I will use my guns to defend the constition and his right to spew his rhetoric.

    What is amusing
is that due to "progressive" ideology, prohibition (of alcohol) was instituted. That resulted in the rise of the bootlegging gangs and their use of sub machine guns that led to the prohibition of private ownership of automatic weapons (through a convoluted common use and tax arrangement). Now "progressive" ideology wants to eliminate another batch of weapons. The real problem is "progressive" ideology.

Brady campaign poll number suggest that.......
......"there is overwhelming support for universal background checks, including 74% of NRA members." Wow! Must happen, right? Well THAT poll questioned 1772 people in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Ohio. Dan Gross president of the Brady campaign insists that IS a majority of ALL voters in the US! How's about spending enough cash to poll 1000 voters in each of the fifty states Mr. Gross? Just goes to show you, if you need support for your position you can pay a pollster to back you up!

    what a joke
The fact that most of the posters on this thread are copying each other while calling the other party parrots is hilarious. Also, if you think someone is actually going to come and take away your guns or you think an assault weapons ban has any chance of getting passed is also laughable. We aren’t in the 90s anymore and the votes arent there and they wont be anytime soon. Its just not going to happen. The gun lobby and gun store owners are working the public like puppets, kind of like how you think Obama is working the democrats. Every 3-4 years the alarm is sounded and every gun owner runs out and stocks up on weapons and the gun store owners sit back and count their stacks of cash. Same story with bullets, which make no sense to me since it’s fairly easy to learn how and make your own ammo.

    03-28-2013 Biden says...
On this subject Biden is neither lying nor misspeaking. The American left is the enemy of all personal freedom. It is amoral and rapacious in its lust for power. Generally speaking deliberate sin is the heart of the ideology. All sins, all the time, while denying there is any such thing as sin. In many ways the current crop of leftist leadership is the living embodiment of evil.
