Obama signs bill to avoid government shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama has signed a stopgap spending bill to keep the government running through the end of September.

The measure leaves in place $85 billion in automatic budget cuts known as the sequester. But it takes steps to ease the impact of the cuts to food inspection and college assistance for active duty military personnel.

The House and Senate passed the spending bill last week. Without it, the government on Wednesday would have run out of money to keep operating.

The measure funds the day-to-day operating budgets of every Cabinet agency through Sept. 30, the end of the 2013 fiscal year. It also provides another $87 billion for overseas military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and maintains a pay freeze for federal workers.

    Maybe after that "Summer of Recovery" thing back in 2009 (it's 2013 now) it's time to consider that you, Not they or them, are not doing something right? Instead of blaming Bush, perhaps ask "What would Clinton do?"

    2014....boner and mcconell are gone. 2016....Is there any conservative on the horizon even remotely considering a run at the Presidency? That would be a foolish political mistake for any republican. Christie might have a chance but Hillary would be my guess as to the Democratic nominee. The republicans have made such fools of themselves in the last 10 years, I'm surprised anyone would admit to being one. Stupid is as stupid does.

    Yup - The voters clearly do not want this destruction of social security and medicare, yet Ryan continues to push it. Voters also clearly want Obamacare - poll after poll show they want what's in it. Yet Ryan continues to push destroying that... It makes me wonder why he continues to pander to such a small minority of the American public. Someone in the far, far right must have some pretty important dirt on him, because there's not a politician alive that can be that stupid and continue to push so hard for a politically dead package without being owned by someone.
