Top Dem strategist says Syria will fade in 2014September 10, 2013 @ 8:02 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - The top campaign strategist for House Democrats says Syria is likely to be a minor issue in congressional elections 14 months from now.
Rep. Steve Israel of New York told reporters Tuesday that the 2014 mid-term elections will not be a referendum on Syria. He said voters will look for candidates who can solve the nation's biggest problems and help the middle class.
Democratic President Barack Obama is seeking congressional support for an airstrike against Syria's government in response to the killing of civilians there with chemical weapons.
Israel said a bigger issue in 2014 will be the nation's health care overhaul, also known as Obamacare. He said more Americans want it to work rather than see it repealed.
Israel chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
