WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama will meet next month at the White House with Pakistan's new prime minister.
The prime minister is Nawaz Sharif (nah-WAHZ' shah-REEF'). Sharif has been seeking a peace deal with the Pakistani Taliban since he was elected in June.
The White House says the Oct. 23 meeting will focus on issues such as energy, trade, regional stability and countering violent extremism.
Islamic militants have carried out dozens of attacks in Pakistan since Sharif took office.
Obama meets Friday with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (MUHN'-moh-hahn sing). India and Pakistan are both nuclear-armed nations. They've had a long-running conflict over the Himalayan territory of Kashmir.
