Conservatives call for a Washington state "carbon tax"

Tonight at Seattle Pacific University a panel will discuss the idea of implementing a "carbon tax" (pollution tax) in Washington state. But the idea doesn't come from a group of left-wing environmentalists, but free-market conservatives (and before you say, "IMPOSSIBLE, by definition this is a RINO operation!" Arthur Laffer, of the "Laffer curve" fame regarding increased revenues from lower tax rates, is on board with the overall idea).

Today I'll speak with former congressman Bob Inglis about it. You can find information about the event tonight and the plan here.

How about a tax proponents tax...
A new tax for anybody involved in creating, implementing, or collecting new taxes. (All politicians, IRS, Climate change drones, Carbonistas, advisers, etc, etc.)

I think %75 of gross income is a fair number. But it could be adjusted higher if necessary. These people aren't paying their fair share and the children so desperately need it.

I planted a dozen trees and watched an AlGore movie, so I'm exempt of course. :P

When you see 'conservatives'(bwahahaha) get on board with the great globalist carbon swindle, you know the end is near. It's not about the planet. IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY!

Simple..... overtaxing is emotional (and a tool of the social engineering crowd), and science is based on fact. The connection is that there is no connection. Note how the libs ignore the fact that the Pacific Ocean is cooling...

While I'm not for carbon taxing and/or trading, It's a fools misuse of science to point at one or two observations that are contrary to a hypothesis and use them to claim that the entire hypothesis is false. Doing so is about as factual and honest as looking at the hundred degree weather we had a couple summers ago and using that -by itself- to claim that global warming is absolutely true. It's a gross misuse of science to support a pre-determined conclusion. And the funniest thing is that while you rail against the emotional response, you are yourself using one.

How can you not see that man is changing the climate? I know science has become a liberal concept, but come on, are you really that stupid? 7 billion people, over a billion cars, and you don't think they have any affect on the environment?

Have you ever started your car with the garage door shut? I don't recommend it, in less than 5 minutes it will knock you out, in 15 minutes it will kill you. Now multiply that by a billion cars running 24/7 all around the world; to ignore the damage being caused is not just ignorant, it's deadly.

Nah, the only way one of today's republicans would be a proponent of a carbon tax is because they figured out a way to make money on it without having to do any hard work.

A new tax with 2/3 passage
Not a bad strategy. Get washington to adopt a pollution tax and everyone will pay a lot more for housing, gasoline, oil changes, pesticides. It should actually help clean the state out of republicans and let the democrats drown in their own purity. I am looking to move out of state now and I know other republicans are too.

Yeah, amazing... He's just pandering to the radical left... Romney would have opened the pipeline and authorized drilling contracts; both efforts would have had an immediate and positive economic impact, and then we'd not be having many of these marginal conversations... Carbon tax? Seriously? Suicide... So it begs the question, why? Cut off our nose to spite our face?

Golfer, while I agree that the pipeline should be built (and I think it still will be), you can't just draw a line on a map where you want it to go and start building it. There is a much more in-depth process involved, especially for a project of that magnitude.

The ranchers in Texas who are losing their livelihoods to drought surely appreciate you keeping up the good fight.

Oh I know what you're going to say, God is using drought to punish farmers and ranchers because the U.S. is so gay tolerant.

"retard" is intolerant, crass and irrelevant...
The term 'retard' is as intolerant and crass as man-made global warming is a hoax, and you have no prove otherwise. Drought happens, so do tsunamis. What, you thing government could help Texas farmers? 1) it/they cannot, and 2) the current administration isn't the least bit interested in what happens to TX farmers. But to further underscore how feckless your post is/was, climate change and the Texas drought have as much to do with man-made activities as your use of "God" and "gay" has to do with the dark side of the moon.

But 'Retard' is a retort of choice for the extremists these days... Don't take aware one of thier favorite words just because it's crass, intolerant and irrelevant. You take away 1/3 of thier arguement when you take away hurtful words.... There's lots of proof that SOMETHING is going on in our environment - and WE need to do something about it. Is it global warming (the actual term nowdays is 'global climate change' - it's a more accurate reflection of whatever this phenomonon is). Is it man caused? Don't know. Is it merely 'natural changes' -- don't know. BUT IT IS HAPPENING. Hurricane Sandy and it's record water levels, the long term drought in Texas that has now moved into much of the midwest... RECURRING Unusual weather all over the world - that is getting worse all the time. MASSIVE melt offs of the polar and antartic ice. None of these 'results' of whatever's happening are in question by serious scientists. The only question is what's causing it. We either react to what's actually happening or we're in trouble.

"It is important to try and invest in cleaner, renewable energy...Keyword: renewable."

I agree with this completely. Everybody (basically) does, it doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you come from. The simple premise...

Even though oil is technically a renewable resource, whether fossil or abiotic in origin. It doesn't renew very quickly and its supply is not infinite. We should be saving our oil for plastics, lubricants, chemical feedstock, etc. Burning it releases several substances that have negative effects on the environment. Forgetting carbon and temperature, there's still heavy metals, various oxides, etc. (A whole bunch of stuff that you wouldn't want in your milkshake.)

The problem is one of overcoming inertia. The world's economy is largely energy based at this point. There's a lot of well established institutions in that profit food chain. And the government can talk all the smack they want about shiny 'green' things, but the simple fact is that governments make lots of revenue from taxing fuel. We even hear whining from officials in our own state when fuel tax revenue declines from lowered consumption(!)

Personally, I'm a huge fan of geothermal power as low hanging energy fruit. But it's not a 'one answer' problem and the technical discussion is almost moot. The real hurdles to clean energy are vested economic and political interests that have no desire to see things change.
