An attack on children
December 14, 2012 @ 3:00 pm
I was filling in on 97.3 KIRO FM this morning with Dave Ross when I first saw the "Breaking News" banner on CNN proclaiming a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school. Within minutes that almost run-of-the-mill shooting story involving 3 adults exploded into a story involving unspeakable carnage inflicted upon the nation's most vulnerable.
As I write, 20 young children are dead having fallen victim to the evil of a madman. Other adults, who followed their instinctive virtue, lost their lives coming to the children's aid.
Much remains unknown, and much of what we "know" at this point is being corrected and changed. We know a young man, armed with two handguns, committed a massacre of innocents at a CT school. Reports have been changing about who he is, and nothing is known of his motive.
The details of the story are horrifying and mind-numbingly sad. It was hard to talk about it without choking up, knowing what news parents and families were enduring.
There was also the question, "What can be done to keep the children safe?" and "What number of these incidents are "acceptable"?" Of course, none are acceptable, but the framing of the question is designed to exclude certain answers.
We'll talk about those things today, but for now, the nation mourns the senseless killing of so many and prays for the parents whose burdens are now beyond imagining.
