Kids--they're what's for dinner

north korea map

I remember during the initial debate about the invasion of Iraq there was much talk about a "containment" policy, similar to that which we used against the far greater Soviet Union. At the time, I wrote a column about the unstated costs of containment--in human terms-- that usually get brushed aside in such considerations. My point wasn't that containment was impossible or even not preferable, my point was that containment has human costs too and we should recognize that.

I was reminded of those costs this morning reading of the mass starvation and hardship faced by the people of North Korea. According to new reports, some places are so overcome by hardship the cannibalism of children and the dead is fairly widespread. When the madness of the ruling regime ends, those lives and the mass suffering need to be considered when history judges past actions regarding the civilized world's efforts to stop the communists' nightmare.

This is why I never believe a Republicon when they say the U.S. is broke
because they are always trying to drag us into another trillion dollar nation overthrowing/rebuilding project. Do you really think China is going to lend us the money to invade their neighbor and ally?

    So what's your point?
Don't like our NK policie??? Your answer is to provide open ended aid to NK with no strings attached??? Even when we have provided aid, it has not been distributed to the people but rather confiscated by the government to further their purposes and buttress their power. Those in the government have never tasted deprivation. Ultimately these people have chosen their leadership and their course. They have created their own hell on earth ruled by evil. Progress toward a nuclear strike capability will continue together with disseminating this technology to Iran and their ilk. No amount of humanitarian outreach will have any beneficial effects. It must be recognized that this is NK's doing and that we at this point can only lookout for our own security at such time as they decide they are ready to launch against our shores.A very disconcerting prospect for those us within the proximity of their potential target area.
