Kids--they're what's for dinner

I remember during the initial debate about the invasion of Iraq there was much talk about a "containment" policy, similar to that which we used against the far greater Soviet Union. At the time, I wrote a column about the unstated costs of containment--in human terms-- that usually get brushed aside in such considerations. My point wasn't that containment was impossible or even not preferable, my point was that containment has human costs too and we should recognize that.
I was reminded of those costs this morning reading of the mass starvation and hardship faced by the people of North Korea. According to new reports, some places are so overcome by hardship the cannibalism of children and the dead is fairly widespread. When the madness of the ruling regime ends, those lives and the mass suffering need to be considered when history judges past actions regarding the civilized world's efforts to stop the communists' nightmare.
