Garbage collection is about to get slower

Tacoma's saving taxpayer dollars by going to every-other-week garbage collection, but are they saving enough?

The headline had me outraged--my garbage is about to be collected every other week rather than weekly but my price stays the same. Luckily, before I tweeted my fury, I read further and discovered that the volume of my can will also double so the overall service remains the same. No harm no foul.

I can see how the city will save on the collection costs, which is great, but one thing still puzzles me. If the collection is every other week, wouldn't that imply that the overall staffing could be cut in half? Am I wrong there? I have no complaints about the guys who collect the trash in Tacoma-- they've been good on my street--but it seems like with the doubling of the time between collections could mean fewer crews needed and I've not seen anything about that.

    Yes You Are Wrong
For starters the same amount of garbage is being collected in total. All they are cutting out is the number of stops at pickup locations. There will be the exact same number of dumps at the transfer station. Also do you know how much they are paying in overtime? I don't either but I know there is some and if they can shed the OT burden that is a savings.
