A father promises to protect, a daughter promises to stay pure. Fathers and daughters will be exchanging these pledges with one another at the Seattle-area’s first big Purity Ball to be held at the Bellevue Hilton June 15.

“Basically we have daddy saying to his daughter, making a covenant pledge that he is going to protect her and take care of her […] and the daughter is going to pledge that she’s going to live with sexual integrity,” says Carrie Abbott, with the Legacy Institute, the organization putting on the Purity Ball.

Abbott tells 770 KTTH host David Boze that the ball is less of a ball or a dance and more a gourmet dinner, but most of all it’s just about creating a special time for dads and daughters.

“We wanted an event that actually set apart a time for daddy and daughter.”

“What we’re lacking in our culture is intentional moments for daddies and daughters,” says Abbott. “The reason that Legacy decided to host this event, we wanted to give dad a chance to say, ‘yeah, I believe this is important. My daughter is precious to me.’ There are usually more opportunities with sons, so we wanted something that a daddy and a daughter could do together.”

Abbott says a well-fathered child does much better out in the world, and this is a moment for the dads to step up and point out what is important.

“Out of wedlock pregnancy rate is over 40 percent. There is a reason for that, and that’s why we say dads listen, there are a lot of good men out there, it’s time for the good men to get together, stand up and say, ‘hey, we think it’s important to raise healthy kids in this culture.'”
