How stabilizing the Oso mountainside may have increased its slide risk

I was speaking to an engineer in the aftermath of the Oso landslide about possible causes. I asked him to send me his ideas and insights. He raised the possibility of the mountainside being further destabilized by government attempts to stablize the slope. It’s only a theory, but since the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance Association is out with their report, I thought it a good time to share Mr. Chopelas’ speculations as well. I appreciate his willingness to put his idea to paper.
