The government should not take control of private property

In Edmonds, there seems to be a movement toward more government and always more government. People are trying to save the trees by making mandates on how to care for the trees.
I do understand wanting to have trees in the community. I don’t know why people build houses and get rid of every tree. Yes, you have pine needles from time to time, but a little bit of shade and the beauty of a little nature seems to make up for it.
But then again, I have control over my property, I don’t have control over other people’s property.
In Edmonds, there was work afoot to try and create new codes that would limit the amount of trees a person could cut down in a 36-month period, regulate how trees are maintained, and force new properties to plant new trees. Not following the code would cost $1,000 fine.
I wish there was a screen grab from Google Earth of Edmonds before the code was proposed because my bet is when this was being debated and in the course of coming weeks there will be more people cutting trees than ever before. People will think if I don’t cut my trees down now, I will never be able to.
But citizens of Edmonds said, “No.”
One of the reasons people love living in Edmonds is the views. And people can plant new trees when they cut the old trees.
I like a tree or two in the way of my view, but when the government starts saying it wants to regulate all these details… You have people wondering, why do you know best about my property? Why should I have to pay you to figure out what my needs are.
