Tacoma Mayor responds to "Republicans are racist" comment

Tacoma's Mayor Marilyn Strickland recently told students at Pacific Lutheran University that the reasons Republicans were unsuccessful in recruiting minorities was because "they are racist." When her comments leaked to the media, she said she intended to say that they were "perceived as racist."

I don't buy the idea that she "intended" to say something different. But I can accept that in hindsight she wishes she had. And that's a start. At least she acknowledges that Republicans are trying to include minorities, which is more than some Democrats have been willing to say of late. And it's good that she feels enough shame in her remarks that she wishes to modify them. As someone who speaks in public for a living, I know it's easy to say something stupid you wish you could take back.

But I wish Mayor Strickland, and other Democrats who can so easily smear 33 percent of the American population (roughly), would pause to consider that perhaps the perception they refer to is of their own making. A party that polled a majority-desire for an African American candidate (Colin Powell) long before Obama; a party that features Indian-American governor's; a party that celebrated the victory of Tim Scott over the son of Strom Thurman; a party in which an African American candidate polled in first place among GOP Presidential primary contenders-is not a party of "racists." It does not think of race in the same way as Democrats. Democrats seek to group people by their gender, race or other identity. Republicans seek to measure people as individuals.

This does not mean there is no racism--but what racism that has yet to be extinguished is the racism of individuals (in both parties of all races).

Here is Mayor Stickland's response to a listener of mine who shared his experience with the mayor's office (name withheld by request):

I wrote a very respectful e-mail to Mayor Strickland of Tacoma last night. She called me personally this morning to speak to me about it. She told me more than once that she was impressed by the respectful tone of my commentary.

She wanted to make the point that not only were her words poorly chosen, but did not convey the meaning of what she was trying to say. Her point was to say that African Americans (she actually used the term 'blacks') agree, socially, with Republicans on most issues such as abortion, the importance of family, faith, etc.... are in line with conservative voters. But that the Republican Party itself has trouble with the problem that it is sometimes "perceived" as racist.

She told me that the idea that all Republicans are racist is ridiculous and she knows that for a fact.

She truly came across to me as very sincere and apologetic for her misstatement.

I've personally chosen to trust Mayor Strickland's word and let bygones be bygones.

If you decide to mention any of this on the air, I have to ask that you omit my name. Blacklisting conservatives is VERY real, even in communities like the Pacific Northwest.

This sort of fear is bred into the typical white people who identify with the Democrat Party and it sometimes comes out in the wrong way. They must be given credit for the big leap forward from their KKK past by electing a clean, light skinned black man with no Negro dialect, (unless he wants one) as President.

They use the term 'Democrat party'.

"...among those of the Republican persuasion," the use of " 'Democrat Party' is now nearly universal" thanks to "Newt Gingrich, the nominal author of the notorious 1990 memo 'Language: A Key Mechanism of Control,' and his Contract with America pollster, Frank Luntz."

People who use the term 'Democrat party' have been, shall we say, 'Controlled'.

It seems to me that the proper name should be Democrat Party. After all, it is made up of a bunch of Democrats and not a bunch of Democratics. I don't feel controlled except maybe by proper English.

When liberals have nothing intelligent to say ( which is ALWAYS ) and have no arguement ( which is ALWAYS ) they call someone a "racist", and in their teensy little undeveloped "minds", they think they win by doing that. That's their magic word. Since they are not capable of anything rational, they will be screaming "racist" every day all day for a year and beyond.

The perception of many democrats is they can make these statements as if they are fact, which of course they are not. Bad blunder but the media provides little heat in any democrat’s kitchen in this state.

Read some history...Which party were the biggest advocates for slavery? And Jim Crow Laws? And which party wanted to abolish both? Democrats wanted it, Republicans didn't. Oh, and Democrats have historically have been the Pro War party. I can't stand either party, because they are basically ONE party. The Republican Party was corrupted by the Neo-Cons coming over from the Democrats(insert Rick Perry and friends) among many other factors such as the "Christian Coalition". You JOKERS are playing right into TPTB's hands. They laugh at all you sheep that still think it's a Republican vs. Democrat. Hahahaha what a bunch of FOOLS! Get a grip before it's too late. It probably already is. Your so called "Savior" Democrats have sold you out just like the other guy's "Savior" Republicans have done. RON PAUL 2012 and CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS!!!!

I haven't heard the demonchimp...I have heard liberals referred to as howler monkeys, and it has nothing to do with race...it's that the left emulate howler monkeys.

Want an example..shout "Mic Check!" around a liberal and you'll get a dozen howler monkeys howling it right back.
