What should Mitt Romney's response to the President's Immigration Executive Order be?

"The private economy is not doing fine, and it's in the president's interest to distract the public with other issues."

To borrow from Carville, "It's the economy stupid."

citing YouTube and not the government website or the signing statement - both of which are easily found. What Reagan did was a sign a bipartisan agreement. A legal congressional act. What Obama has done is bypassed congress and decided to not enforce the law as written. I am not even certain it's constitutionally legal. It's a very different matter.

Yes - these clowns today are so far to the extreme right that Reagan would be a traitor if he came up in the ranks today vs. back then. His views of the world and the country aren't far enough to the right to be palatable to them.

I wouldn't begin to guess what he *should* say

What should Romney do ? Let it alone.
And stress economic programs that are of benefit to the Hispanic communitieS (one size does not fit all). Obama is making a feeble gesture to recoup Hispanic votes. It's a nice gesture - but military service is already a path to citizenship.

Nothing really new here - but is Mitt attacks, Oz scores points.

Since Obama gathered almost 70% of the Hispanic vote in the last election he only helps that number with this order. It will also give him a big boost in Florida I believe. UR correct that Mitt can't attack this order.Romney I believe has already sunk himself with that idea about self-deportation I mean how silly was that?

Messiah, it's a matter of turnout
Sure, Obama had a lot of Hispanic support in 2008, but enthusiasm has been ebbing. So, what to do ?

This plays to his base (and is more substantive than the endorsement of gay marriage, etc.). But It's also relatively harmless and a humane thing to do.

And Romney gains absolutely nothing in opposition. The anti-immigrant people need no more energizing.

Obama is deporting far more illegal aliens than Bush did
and while Obama is putting emphasis on the dangerous criminal illegal aliens instead of the least dangerous, Bush and the Republicons coddled and rewarded the dangerous criminal illegal aliens throughout Bush's two terms by doing nothing.

Hate to break the news to Mitt, but the POTUS does not control the economy...
Immigration policy, however, is clearly in the president's wheelhouse.

So let's all rag on the president for failing to miraculously adjust world markets, a close to zero birth rate among US citizens, a decline in household incomes, an increase of the median age of the population to the point were the appetite for consumer goods has been reasonably satisfied and the Worlds Largest Retailer refusing to do business with anybody who manufactures in the United States.

Yup, that's all his fault. And since the economy was shedding 3/4 of a million jobs per month for the last several months before he took office, we need to ask him what he did to so thoroughly screw up the national prosperity he inherited.

    He can't claim ignorance,
since he said in at a Univision town hall in 2011, that if he ever tried to do what he just did he would be in violation of the law.

He is skilled in the use of language and teleprompter, so when he said the illegals are "Americans in their hearts", he clearly did not mean Norte Americanos, since to be a Norte Americano in your heart, you must respect the separation of power that holds the executive branch in check. He meant to say they are Latin Americans in their hearts and thus appreciate the power of the dictator.

What should Romney say or do?
Well, he should state what his immigration policies would look like and how he would get them passed through congress. He can not attack Obama on this other than state he would not use an executive order to over ride the laws, but instead do it correctly through congress.

Personally, I am sick of Obama and his governing by executive order instead of using congress to pass laws as intended by the constitution. Congress needs to act on a law that would restrict executive orders so that they can not be used to NOT uphold laws passed by congress and signed by a President. Also, what law authorizes Executive Orders anyway and why did congress give this power to the executive branch?

    @Paul Kersey
Let's assume that Obama is violating the law with this executive order (note this order does not even exist yet as I searched for it). Who is going to do anything about it?

Do you expect congress to veto it - it takes 2/3rd's of congress to veto an executive order as previously determined by the US Supreme Court?

Do you expect congress to impeach the President? Remember the Senate is controlled by the D's.

The only option would be someone with standing taking it to the courts. Who would have standing to bring this to the courts?

    Concerning this Executive Order
It is not constitutional as it sets law. This has been ruled previously by the Supreme Court: Until the 1950s, there were no rules or guidelines outlining what the president could or could not do through an executive order. However, the Supreme Court ruled in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer, 343 US 579 (1952) that Executive Order 10340 from President Harry S. Truman placing all steel mills in the country under federal control was invalid because it attempted to make law, rather than clarify or act to further a law put forth by the Congress or the Constitution. Presidents since this decision have generally been careful to cite which specific laws they are acting under when issuing new executive orders.

    thank you Rick
For a more analytical approach. All I've seen discussed was how politically expedient (or bloody brilliant) this was. Or who did what first via executive devolving to nothing more than just a finger pointing match.

The news coverage for Bush was fraught with hyperbole ("He's on his way to being a dictator!") but at least you didn't have to dig so aggressively to find the nugget of truth.

I don't think I've seen a single journalist with the integrity to even start asking the right questions, much less pursue the answers about what this decision might mean for the welfare of this country.
