Kshama Sawant invites you to a pots and pans noise brigade to end Israel-Gaza violence

God bless our Socialist City Councilwoman. She now is the latest to try to bring peace to the Middle East.

It’s not just the Bellingham City Council that wants to bring peace to the Middle East, it is also the Seattle City Council, primarily the Socialist City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant who has now introduced a resolution condemning Israel for the violence in Gaza. She also had some advice for all of us on how we can help bring about peace in the Middle East.

Now, I know what you are thinking. You’re saying: ‘But Dori, there have been centuries and centuries of conflict between the Muslims and the Jews, how in the world can the little old Seattle City Council play a role in bringing peace to the Middle East?’

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you your Socialist City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant:

“All killing of innocent people, women and children especially, should be condemned,” said Sawant at a Seattle City Council meeting. “And the last month of killing of Palestinians in Gaza I’m sure for most of us are not only stomach turning, they’re one in a long and documented series of war crimes stretching over decades. This has been happening with a tacit or overt complicity of U.S. imperialism and I think we, as elected officials, have to have a statement in describing the role that the U.S. Congree and Senate has played.”

Yes, please Kshama, because everything in Seattle is solved. We don’t have any traffic problems. We don’t have any problems at all that the Seattle City Council could directly impact, so please spend your time weighing in on the Israeli-Hamas conflict. Please give us more:

“It is the responsibility of elected officials everywhere to speak openly to stop the humanitarian catastrophe and to condemn it in the strongest possible terms. Next Saturday, there will be again the weekly protest from noon to 2 p.m. at Westlake, but this Thursday also there is another event at 7:30 p.m. at Seattle Central Community College. There will be a pots and pans noise brigade against the violence in Gaza and I invite everybody to join us there.”

That sounds intriguing, a pots and pans noise brigade against violence in Gaza. That should stop it.

After Kshama’s statements, fellow Seattle City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen asked if he could say something, trying to bring some measure of sanity to the City Council meeting.

“I want to say that you do not reflect my views. These are your personal views,” said Rasmussen. “Personally, I abhor the war and the violence that is occurring in Gaza and in that area in general, but I believe that it’s wrong to condemn one party alone. So you may use your podium as you wish, but I do not share your views in terms condemning one party alone, but I do share your view in abhorring the war and the violence that is occurring.”

OK, so they don’t like war and violence on the Seattle City Council, and by taking this stand, it will no doubt hasten peace to the Middle East. But I don’t want to just hasten it, I want peace today and I’m trying to think what can I do today right now to try to bring peace to the Middle East.

Kshama Sawant did say: “There will be a pots and pans noise brigade against the violence in Gaza.”

But that’s not until Thursday. Why does Kshama Sawant want the violence to continue for another 52 hours? How many more people have to die?

I went back to our kitchenette at the station and found a pot and Producer Jake found a pan. So if a pots and pan noise brigade is going to end the violence in the Middle East, why wait?

OK, let me check CNN and see if our pots and pans brigade has brought about peace. Nothing so far. They may not have heard our pots and pans yet, but once Hamas and the Israelis hear it, I’m sure they will lay down their weapons.
