Helicopter crashes near Oso

Jul 22, 2014, 12:19 PM | Updated: 11:11 pm

OSO, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a helicopter crashed during a logging operation near Oso, Washington, injuring the sole occupant.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the helicopter, a Hughes 369, crashed while lifting cedar blocks.

Chad Clark with the Skagit County sheriff’s office says the 63-year-old pilot was conscious and breathing after the crash. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Clark says the pilot had landed to pick up cedar blocks. As he was taking off, the tail of the helicopter clipped a logging cable, spun out of control and crashed in a clear cut.

Records show the helicopter is registered to Olympic Air, Inc. A man who answered the phone at the Shelton-based company declined to comment.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
