About a dozen people enjoying coffee inside an East Hill Starbucks in Kent Tuesday were interrupted by gunfire when a woman shot her male companion in the head as the two walked inside.

According to the Kent Police Department, the 23-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the face at close range.

“He was not able to talk due to the wound, but he was able to communicate and write down the suspect’s name on a piece of paper,” Asst. Chief Derek Kammerzell said at the scene.

A 24-year-old woman claiming to be the suspect turned herself in at Tacoma police headquarters about an hour after the shooting, a department spokesperson confirmed.
Kammerzell said a motive is unclear, as is the relationship between the suspect and victim.

“There’s no indication from the witnesses that there was any fight,” he said.

The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
