Some Tacoma firefighters are getting a chance to show their stuff on national TV, thanks to a stellar lip-synching turn in a video for “Good Morning America.”

The amusing video, set to the hit song “Safe and Sound” by Capital Cities, shows the firefighters battling blazes, saving kittens from trees and busting some moves around T-town. It drew enough votes on a GMA contest to land them in the finals along with two other fire departments.

Firefighters Kurt Gordon, Debbie Garrison, and Kris “Hollywood” Hampton are representing the department on the show this week.

“We had a lot of fun shooting it and then sent it off and hoped for the best and sure enough we got selected and now we’re in New York representing Tacoma Fire Department,” Hampton tells KIRO Radio.

The trio took part in a friendly dance-off on the show Monday. On Tuesday, they’ll square off with the other competitors from Florida and Texas in a series of physical challenges. Then on Wednesday, it’s a dunk-tank trivia challenge.

The winning team receives $10,000, and will be announced Wednesday. Hampton says the department plans to donate the winnings to Coats for Kids and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“We’re going to put in some work tomorrow and get to Wednesday, and hopefully bring home the prize for charity,” Hampton says.

“Hollywood” says the whole experience has been pretty exciting. And even though it’s a lot of fun, he hopes it also does some good for the community and the department alike.

“That’s part of the reason why I became a firefighter, to help the public and help them out, give them a better day. It’s a wonderful experience.”

Good Morning America airs weekdays at 7 a.m. on ABC.
