Know before you go: Holiday weekend travel

Jul 3, 2014, 7:36 AM | Updated: Jul 6, 2014, 8:02 am

While Thursday ahead of the long holiday weekend was tough on area roadways, drivers can expect another tough day Sunday.

The Washington State Department of Transportation says the real congestion starts around 11 a.m. Sunday and doesn’t let up until about 9 p.m. in some spots.

The mountain passes and I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord are expected to be some of the toughest chokepoints.

The state ferry system also sees long wait times both Sunday and Monday after the July 4th weekend.

WSDOT has provided charts to show when the following routes are expected suffer from the most congestion:

I-90 North Bend to Cle Elum
US 2 Stevens Pass to Leavenworth
I-5 U.S./Canada Border
I-5 Olympia to Tacoma
