Summary Box: Small company stocks are bright spot

(AP) - SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL: Small company stocks were a bright spot for the market in a subdued start to the week for Wall Street. The Russell 2000 index climbed above 1,000 points for the first time and ended higher Monday, even as the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index edged lower.

FED AHEAD: Stock trading was subdued as investors waited on more information about the Federal Reserve's economic stimulus program. On Wednesday Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will appear before Congress and the central bank will release the minutes of its most recent policy meeting.

BUYING PROTECTION: Websense, an internet security firm, surged $5.53, or 29 percent, to $24.76 after the company agreed to be taken private for $906 million by private equity firm Vista Equity Partners.
