Slow progress for baby Duke caught in Oso mudslide

Several people, including a 22-week-old infant, were critically injured in the Oso mudslide Saturday.

The youngest slide patient, 5-month-old Duke Saddarth, remains in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His mother, 25-year-old Amanda Skorjanc, remains in satisfactory condition.

“I can’t go into much detail,” says hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg. “We’re seeing more stability with this little boy and we’re seeing some improvement, but we’re going to know more as time goes on.”

Skorjanc has had a chance to visit her young son in the intensive care unit. Gregg says it was a short visit because Skorjanc herself still has several surgeries and a long recovery ahead of her.

An 81-year-old man and 37-year-old man also injured in the slide remain in serious condition in intensive care.

There has been some improvement for a 58-year-old man who has been moved from serious to satisfactory condition.

Harborview is accepting cards and letters of support for the patients and their families.

“I know there’s a whole community out there that’s worried about everyone,” says Gregg. “Sending a note of support is huge to these families.”

Cards or notes can be mailed to “Oso Landslide Patient,” Harborview Medical Center, 325 9th Avenue, Seattle WA, 98104 or email through the “email a Patient” website.
