The talk of an NHL team potentially coming to Seattle continues. This week, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman talked about the possibility for expansion and mentioned Seattle in the conversation.
It seemed about time for Seattle to come up with a potential name. Below is a list of nominees submitted by Dori Monson Show listeners.
Names from Seattle’s hockey past and present were popular among the nominations. Seattle Metropolitans gives a nod to the professional hockey team in Seattle until 1924 that actually won the Stanley Cup in 1917. The Seattle Totems played in the area up through the early 70s and a junior WSHL Totems team is still in area. The Thunderbirds currently represent Seattle in the Western Hockey League.
Sonics was also a nomination that appeared multiple times among those doubtful Seattle will see a return of the NBA but wanted to see the name survive in the Seattle area.
Still more name suggestions were based not in the city’s sports history but on well-known features of the area, such as Chinooks, Sockeyes, and Steelheads.
