Israeli soldiers take positions during an exercise which simulates warfare in the Gaza Strip, at an army base in the south of Israel, Monday, July 14, 2014. Israel began its campaign against militants in the Hamas-controlled Gaza last Tuesday, saying it was responding to heavy rocket fire from the densely populated territory. The military says it has launched more than 1,300 airstrikes since then, while Palestinian militants have launched nearly 1,000 rockets at Israel. (AP Photo/Tsafrir Abayov)

A good way to get a feel for what’s going on in Israel is to listen to local radio.

This is IBA in Jerusalem, where in addition to announcing concert cancellations due to missiles, they interviewed one Anita Tucker. She left the United States in 1975 to settle an area of the Gaza strip called Gush Katif. Back then she and her fellow settlers were actually welcomed by the local Muslims for the jobs they created.

But by 2005 Anita’s settlement was considered illegal, and the Israeli government used SWAT teams to forcibly move everyone 40 kilometers away. A major blunder, she says.

“We sent out messages warning everybody that if the Gush Katif towns are taken away there terror is going to reach everywhere. The only solution today is to set up Jewish towns again next door to Arab towns.

I’m not sure how well that would go over with the other side. But no time to think about that, because it’s time for a commercial.

To live in a senior living residence is a smart investment. That’s what I explained to my daughters when I decided to come to Israel from the United States …

Yes, coverage of the latest crisis brought to you by a senior living center.

Here I live the life I want. A fabulous apartment. English-speaking neighbors and activities from morning til night.

Little did they know how true that claim would be.

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?
