Snow flurries possible as Puget Sound starts to warm up

Dec 9, 2013, 5:28 AM | Updated: Dec 10, 2013, 10:01 am

Snow flurries and freezing rain are still a possibility as the weather starts to snap out of the freezing temperatures we’ve experienced over the last week.

Snow is most likely to fall in the Cascade foothills and along the coast. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the lower Columbia I-5 corridor in Cowlitz County.

Weather is causing some school delays in coastal counties and in Thurston and Snohomish counties. Check for the latest information on the MyNorthwest.com school closings & alerts page.

Temperatures are expected to warm Tuesday afternoon and rain is possible. Forecasters predict the high will be in the upper 30’s on Tuesday.

In preparation for the worst, the Washington State Department of Transportation has said it’s ready for whatever weather decides to show up.

WSDOT changed to its 24-hour schedule to handle the changing winter weather and has stockpiled sand and salt at its Bellevue maintenance yard near SR 520.

Maintenance Superintendent Jim McBride said the plan is to lay down salt ahead of the bad weather and then put down a sand-salt mixture, or straight sand, if freezing rain or snow hits.

The state has 29 plows and trucks to work the freeways and highways in King County between Swamp Creek and Tukwila and from near Snoqualmie Pass to the ferry terminal in Seattle.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing in Eastern Washington this week with a chance of snow or light freezing rain.
