Seahawks fans are going to take another shot at a noise world record Monday night.
Once again, the 12th Man will try to set a Guinness World Record for loudest crowd roar at an open-air sports stadium as the Seahawks take on the New Orleans Saints at CenturyLink Field for Monday Night Football.
Seahawks fans briefly held the record for the “loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium” after the Sept. 15 game against the San Francisco 49ers. But Kansas City Chiefs fans later beat the 12th Man record, hitting 137.5 decibels.
Ear doctor Sepehr Oliaei puts the sound the 12th Man will have to achieve in perspective.
“The last record was set at 136.6 decibels, and the one that Kansas City set was even higher, at over 137 decibels. To compare that, that is louder than a jackhammer, or jet engine at takeoff.”
Oliaei recommends fans attending the game bring sound-suppression devices, like ear muffs or ear plugs.
CenturyLink Field says free earplugs will be available Monday night at all guest services stands.
Oliaei says if your ears are still buzzing days later, contact your doctor.
“These levels of noise have been shown to really cause temporary or permanent loss of hearing and damage to the ears,” says Oliaei.
