A study came out that says Seattle is one of the loneliest cities in the United States. According to the study, it’s one of the 10 worst cities for making social connections. Seattle’s always had this reputation. I grew up in Ballard, some people say it’s that Scandinavian frostiness, others say we’re too into our cell phones and Facebook and Twitter and being online to have human interaction.

Is it true Seattle is one of the loneliest cities in the United States? That’s what this study says and I believe it. I believe it because I know the reason Seattle is a lonely city.

And this isn’t me pushing religion on everybody. It’s not me pushing having kids on everybody. But the fact is, Seattle is the second-most childless city in the country. San Francisco is the only major city with fewer children than Seattle. We are also the most un-churched city in the country. Fewer Seattleites go to church than any other major city in the country.

Where are communities built? In our schools and in our churches. Yes, there are lots of other places and lots of other ways you can be part of a community. But the fact is that these two institutions are big community builders.

For my wife and me, many of our best friends, we met through our kids. We became friends with the parents of our kids’ friends, and many of our closest friends are parents of kids that our kids were friends with. That has built this wonderful, incredible community for us. Just as going to church builds wonderful communities.

So if anybody is challenging or questioning the fact that Seattle is one of the loneliest cities in the U.S. I’m certain that is true because we have for whatever reason, decided to turn our back on two institutions that are big for forging community.
