First there was the infamous column by The Seattle Times’ Danny Westneat. Then, there was the time KIRO Radio producer Jake Skorehim tried calling police about an early-morning car break-in outside his home that resulted in no police response.

But the most recent tale of Seattle Police Department waiting six hours to investigate a car theft that was practically handed to them in handcuffs that pushed KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson over the top.

“Seattle police does not care about your property,” he said. “That is the message; the only message that can come out of this.”

Dori praised the Bellevue Police Department and a private security company for their response to a reported car theft where the OnStar GPS led police directly to a Pacific Place Shopping Center garage in downtown Seattle. The SPD, however, didn’t show up for hours, even after the theft suspects came back looking for the car. Not only does this amount to an “absolute disregard for property crimes” from Dori’s perspective, it was also a blown chance to make an arrest.

“Instead these two guys are running free and Seattle police have decided once again that our property isn’t worth their time,” he said. “This is why we’ve become one of the biggest smash-and-grab cities in the country.”

Dori called the SPD’s response “shameful.”

“Seattle police has a lot of questions to answer right now because when our cars get smashed or stolen, homes get broken into, that turns our lives upside down,” he said. “And for some reason, Seattle police have decided that it’s not a priority. I don’t know if this Chief (Kathleen) O’Toole, if this goes up to Ed Murray’s office — I don’t know where it is. I would love to find out from them why a car theft is such a low priority that they can’t respond within five hours while a poor Pacific Security guy is sitting on the car making sure the thieves don’t come back a second time … This is a shameful response.”
