Laughing ’til it hurts
It was another mashup of politics, Hollywood and sports at the annual White House Correspondents dinner. There are so many stars now it has a red carpet, and while everybody’s on their best behavior, it’s never quite as much fun when your party’s not in the White House.
“We rolled out healthcare.gov. That could have gone better,” said President Obama.
The president always makes fun of himself, of course.
“At one point things got so bad, the 47 percent called Mitt Romney to apologize,” Obama said.
But the presidential self-deprecation is mainly a washing of the hands to prepare for the real fun, which is skewering the other side.
“How well does Obamacare have to work before you don’t want to repeal it? What if everyone’s cholesterol drops to 120? What if it gave Mitch McConnell a pulse?”
Mitch McConnell got his, as did Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, and Fox News, “Let’s face it Fox, you’ll miss me when I’m gone. It will be harder to convince the American people that Hillary was born in Kenya.”
And he couldn’t resist a certain Nevada Rancher Cliven Bundy.
“As a general rule, things don’t end well if the sentence starts, ‘Let me tell you about something I know about the negro.’
It was a sobering reminder why elections matter
– control of the White House means control of the jokes.
