Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn last week touted the fact that now 100 businesses in Seattle have declared themselves gun free.
“Some people have asked is this an important thing to do. I think the answer is that when you have 100 businesses signing up that it is an important thing to do,” said McGinn.
Here is my question about this. Remember the florist in the Tri-Cities that said they didn’t want to provide flowers for a gay wedding. The Attorney General of our state is suing that florist for exercising her private business rights, saying that the gays are a protected class.
Here is my question: Is the attorney general of Washington going to sue the 100 businesses in Seattle that have declared themselves a gun-free zone? Because we have a U.S. constitution that guarantees everybody the right to keep and bear arms.
I want everyone to understand, in me asking this question, I actually am fine with what these businesses are doing. I think a private business should have great latitude to set its own terms and policies and if they want to declare themselves a gun-free zone, I think they should be allowed to. Just as I believe a florist in the Tri-Cities, if, because of their Christian faith, they don’t want to do a gay wedding, they should be allowed to not do gay weddings.
But what strikes me is this as sheer an utter hypocrisy as you can possibly imagine. I bet if you went to those 100 businesses, all of which I’m sure are wonderful, progressive thinkers, operating in the city of Seattle, I bet if you went to those 100 businesses and you said, ‘What do you think about that florist that won’t do flowers for the gay wedding,’ I bet 95 out of 100 would say, ‘Oh they’re horrible, hateful people and yes, I support the attorney general’s lawsuit against that business.’
I bet I’m one of the few consistent people on this because I’ve supported the business in Tri-Cities in its effort to exercise their religious freedom and religious rights, and I support the Seattle business in banning guns.
I just want to know is the attorney general going to be as consistent as I am on this. If they’re suing the Tri-City florist, are they also going to sue the 100 businesses in the Seattle that are discriminating against gun owners, which is also constitutionally protected?
