Voyeur Steven Powell to be released from prison next month

Oct 10, 2013, 12:26 PM | Updated: 12:38 pm

Steven Powell, the notorious voyeur and father of Josh Powell, will get out of prison November 4, the Washington Department of Corrections announced Thursday.

Powell is the father-in-law of Susan Cox Powell, the Puyallup native who disappeared from her home in Utah in 2009.

Steven Powell was convicted of voyeurism in 2012 and sentenced to 30 months in prison. He was found guilty on 14 counts of voyeurism for secretly photographing two young girls in their bathroom from his home next door.

Powell will live in a private home in Tacoma and be required to wear a GPS locator for at least the first 30 days of his community supervision, according to a DOC news release.

The DOC says Powell will also be required to attend a sex-offender treatment program and follow the terms of his community supervision. That includes getting permission from his community corrections officer to leave Pierce County. He’s also required to report to his community corrections officer twice each month.

Powell is prohibited from moving back into his Puyallup home as one of the terms of his release.

Once he’s released, he’ll be prohibited from having any camera or video recording equipment. He’s also banned from possessing any sexually explicit materials and can’t join any social networks. He is forbidden from having unsupervised Internet access and cannot have any contact with his victims.

Powell’s son, Josh, who was considered a person of interest in Susan Powell’s disappearance, blew up his rented Puyallup home in February 2012, killing himself and the couple’s two children.
