listen Listen: Empty seat alert: Mariners lost the most fans of any pro sports teams
Mike Salk from 710 ESPN Seattle discusses a new study finding the Mariners lost the most fans of any pro sports team

When the Mariners finished with a 93-69 record in 2002, fans regularly filled the seats at Safeco Field. A decade of futility, however, has increasingly kept them away and earned the M's the dubious distinction as the team with the biggest drop in attendance among all teams from the four major pro sports.

A new analysis by 24/7 Wall St. reveals Seattle saw a 51.4 percent decline over the past decade. Stadium capacity last year was just 44.4 percent, a Major League Baseball low. And the study finds season ticket sales have plummeted by 61 percent since 2002.

It's understandable. The report says on-field performance is the biggest driver of attendance. The Mariners stumbled to a third straight losing season in 2012, finishing the year last in the AL West with a 75-87 record.

All those empty seats mean more than just lost ticket revenues. A fan who doesn't go to the game "isn't going to buy concessions, isn't going to pay for parking, spend the other money in the ballpark or arena that they would have otherwise," Sports Business Journal research director David Broughton said.

Despite the huge drop in attendance, the Mariners aren't about to go broke. Ticket sales are no longer the primary source of revenue.

"Baseball's a little different the way money's made these days," 710 ESPN's Mike Salk said in an interview with "Seattle's Morning News". "They get revenue-sharing dollars from around the league. So all 30 teams put money into a hat and then they spread it out."

An even bigger factor is TV revenue. The richest teams like the Yankees and Red Sox make far more than anyone else thanks to billion-dollar deals with their own networks. But even the Mariners make a good chunk of change from their agreement with Root Sports, where ratings remain strong despite the team's performance.

"Ratings are enormous for Mariners games on TV and on the radio as well," Salk said. "All those people that love baseball still watch the team."

But Salk points out the fewer fans in the stands, the less the team can make.

"All the advertising that is done in stadium is not revenue shared. The better you are, the more people that show up, the more money you can make on in-stadium revenue," he said.

Ironically, the Mariners have been far from frugal over the past decade. "It has not been an issue of them not spending money. A couple of years ago in 2008 they were the first team ever to spend $100 million to lose 100 games," Salk said.

The Mariners' 51.4 percent attendance decline is far greater than any other team. The Cleveland Indians saw attendance drop 38.7 percent over the past decade, while the Houston Astros lost 36.1 percent of their fans during the same 10-year span.

    Stupid Number Comparison
Last year they ranked last over the decade numbers too. Yes, I understand that a winning team pulls fans in. But you can't compare 2011 to 2001 when the team won 116 games. You couldn't buy a ticket to the games that year. Of course you'll have the largest attendance drop over that time. And 2002 was still riding the high of 2001. In 10 years the Mariners could possibly be at the top of the list for largest increase of attendance over the decade.

Really? WHAT A DUMB A55 comment. what the heck does your rambling mean anyway? This team has been dog doo for a real long time, 31 out of 35 yrs. This teams attendence sucked before 2001. You fail to bring that into the equasion. The 2001 season was a anomoly. THE DIDNT WIN JACK. BIG FREAKING DEAL they won 116 games BIG DEAL! they didnt even make the series. WHY? BECAUSE DUMB AND DUMBER DIDNT WANT TO SPEND THE LITTLE EXTRA TO PICK UP THE BAT LOU NEEDED. They peed all over themselves.

Alas - the bliss of futility
There is a concrete reason this team is and has been failing miserably over the last decade - it's upper management combined with ownership . Round pegs in square holes . The owner doesn't seem to care or have any passion about this endeavor , it's a commodity that either makes money or losses money . Look at the other prospering teams and you'll find an owner who is passionate and cares about his team , someone who will do what needs to be done when it needs to be done rather than delegate it to a group of bozos and beancounters who haven't a clue what to do . Armstrong and Lincoln have never been the right people for this job , but as long as ownership stays the same they'll stay put . All we'll have to look forward to will be another decade of "the bliss of futility".

    Win Just Win
born and raised here, I've seen it all. What I do now is wait for a friend to ask... "I have these M's tickets to give away... don't want to see them go to waste..." Happens 4-5 times a year. I say "yes, thank you". Then I move down to the empty seats... you know the ones... 13th row right between home and 1st... haha suckers!!!

    Economic recession(s) + lackluster performance =
Well, you know. The term "fair weather fan" in Seattle has always a bit of an oxymoron, but there it is. At least Safeco hasn't resurrected the nickname "King County Morgue" that the Dome had in the salad days of Mariner baseball. Maybe they could sell tickets for "movie nights" on the big tron now!

Besides the obvious that this stat shows....

Maybe the Mariner's should reduce, not enlarge their stadium. Since TV and radio ratings are so high, why do we need such a big field?

Move the fences in. WAYYYY in. And follow them with the size of the building.

Think of the savings on future builds.

    Sandlot for the stars.

    Mariners rule, management bites......

    Need changes made...NOW!!
Like many other fans, I read ESPN, SI, and other sports info and I'm very concerned about the negative press regarding the Mariners. Even our own media, and rightly so. We repeatedly read about Jack seeking to bolster our offense and we read about the various names, but we see nothing concrete. The Mariners have made these types of statements before with nothing tangible to show for it. The GM meetings are coming up and again there is "conversation" about Jack doing this, considering that, etc. I am an avid Mariner, and baseball, fan. While I think out young players, at least some of them, will blossom into quality MLB players, to bring people back into Safeco we need something done....NOW!! This year!! I realize this is easy for me to say as the other teams have a say in whatever Jack tries to do, but it seems we have the chips and the money to make a blockbuster signing or signings, and/or trades.
