Would you still consider skipping Seattle’s downtown tunnel if the toll was only a $1?

The committee looking at tolling the tunnel appears to have settled on charging drivers a dollar to use the tunnel and a $1.25 during peak hours.

The Seattle Times reports the tolls would be collected 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The committee believes this pricing system does the best job of raising money and keeping drivers from avoiding the tunnel.

It had been looking at charging up to $3 during peak hours.

Tolls need to pay for $200 million worth of construction costs on the tunnel and hundreds of millions of dollars for maintenance and insurance over the first 30 years.

This is only a recommendation. The tolling commission will set the final price.
