King County wants to be first in state to stop cooperating with feds on illegal criminals

I am a little bit incredulous at what is happening here in King County in the effort to keep illegal immigrants from deportation.

King County wants to be the first in the state to refuse to cooperate with the federal government in getting illegal immigrants out of the country.

The ordinance that’s been proposed here in King County (by councilmembers Larry Gossett, Joe McDermott, and Larry Phillips) says essentially that illegals who are accused of minor crimes, that the feds will not be able to come in and do any kind of hold on them (24 hours).

The summary of the ordinance begins:

This Proposed Ordinance would make it the policy of the county to only honor civil immigration hold requests (detainers) from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for individuals who have been convicted of a violent or serious crime as defined in Washington statute. Read more from the county.

But according to a memo from the King County Prosecutor’s Office obtained by KING 5, regarding the proposed ordinance, it would not subject a person with first time offense conviction of any nature, including violent crime or homicide, to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer, or hold. Also, those with previous convictions, even of some serious crimes, including drive-by shootings, residential burglary and threats to bomb, would not be subject to an ICE detainer at the King County Jail.

Really? So if an illegal alien commits a drive-by shooting and has a prior, King County will not cooperate with the federal government to get them out of our country? We’re going to be the first county in the state and one of the only in the nation that’s going to give that kind of protection to illegals.

So what does that do then?

It sends a message to the very well-organized illegal pipeline: Seattle is a sanctuary city. We’re already a sanctuary city and now, if an illegal alien commits a drive-by shooting and the feds say, ‘You know, we are going to deport that person after they serve their time.’ King County is going to say, ‘No. We’re not going to let the feds know. We’re not going to cooperate with the feds. We’re going to give all kinds of social cover to the illegals.’

So guess where the illegals that come into this country are going to come. They’re going to stream into the friendliest county in the country that accepts and tolerates their abhorrent behavior, their criminal behavior, if these immigration rights advocates and others get their way.

Policies like this led directly to the murder of a young woman at the University of Washington a few years ago.

Rebecca Griego was an employee at the University of Washington. She got into a relationship with an illegal, Jonathan Rowan.

By the way, for everybody who says it’s racist to oppose this, Jonathan Rowan was here illegally from England, but he was here illegally.

This illegal, Jonathan Rowan, he walked into Rebecca Griego’s office at the University of Washington and murdered Griego, a woman he dated briefly and who’d filed a protection order against him.

Now if Jonathan Rowan, when he was stopped for a traffic infraction a few weeks before he murdered this young woman, if he hadn’t been protected by Seattle’s sanctuary city law, which refuses to allow the police to inquire about the immigration status of somebody they stop, maybe the police could have started with the federal authorities procedures to get this illegal back to England.

But no, we’re too compassionate for that and because of our compassion, a young woman was brutally murdered in her office at the University of Washington.

Now, certainly there are plenty of murders committed by American citizens, but when a murder is committed by an illegal and we could have gotten that illegal out of the country before they committed that murder, then the blood trail leads directly to those who push for these policies and the politicians who adopt these policies.

Update: King County Sheriff John Urquhart insists that crime will not rise if the county refuses to honor every federal request for an immigration hold at the jail.

“I believe that it is one more step that we can take to reassure people that we, the sheriff’s department, are not going to deport people or turn them over to the federal government in most cases and have them deported.”

Some police agencies across the country refuse to honor immigration holds because the federal government does not reimburse local agencies for the added costs.
