Heroic mother thwarts kidnapping attempt

Jun 3, 2013, 12:23 PM | Updated: Jun 4, 2013, 5:54 am

A White Center mother is being called a hero for fighting off a would-be kidnapper who tried to carry off her 3-year-old son.

King County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Cindi West tells KING 5 the mother was playing tag with the boy in their yard in the area of SW 104th and 3rd Avenue SW when she turned around to see someone grab the child and begin running away.

The mom chased the kidnapper and wrestled the child away from him. She threw herself on top of the child and kicked and punched until the would-be kidnapper ran off.

The mother suffered bruises and a black eye, but the child is safe.

West said unfortunately, there were no other witnesses to the incident and detectives do not have a good description of the attacker, other than he was dressed all in black.

It’s the fourth reported child abduction in the Seattle area in the last week.

Earlier Monday, a woman told Seattle police a man tried to get into her car where her 4-year-old son sat as she walked her daughter to Coe Elementary School in the 2400 block of 7th Av W on Queen Anne.

The woman did not realize anything had happened until she got to her car. The boy told her that the man tried to get into the car by trying all the doors.

The woman then watched the subject get into a bright red, shiny Pontiac Grand Am. She tried to follow the vehicle, but lost sight of it.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, between 25 to 32 years of age, light complexion, 5’9″ to 5’10”, very thin, with shaved head, wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

On Sunday, a family attending a fundraising event near Seattle Center chased down a kidnapping suspect who tried to snatch a 4-year-old boy who was holding his grandmother’s hand. They were watching the Komen Race for the Cure at 5th and Broad.

The child’s father and uncle chased after the guy and an officer on traffic control a few blocks away, at 4th and Cedar, arrested a 35-year-old man. He’s jailed on investigation of kidnapping.

Last Wednesday May 29, police say a 33-year-old woman grabbed a 2 1/2-year-old toddler and fled from Mary’s Place shelter located in the 1800 block of 9th Avenue.

Police caught up with the woman and child about 30 minutes later and arrested the woman.

The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of kidnapping.
