Couple injured in bridge collapse hires an attorney

May 31, 2013, 2:49 PM | Updated: 3:56 pm

A couple injured when an Interstate 5 bridge collapsed over the Skagit River last week has retained an attorney.

Dan and Sally Sligh were among three people who fell into the water when a compromised girder caused a portion of the bridge to collapse on May 23.

Chris Davis, a Seattle-based personal injury attorney with the Davis Law Group, said his firm will actively investigate the case to determine who may be at fault.

“Sometimes it takes a lawsuit by a private citizen to hold everybody, every potentially blame-worthy entity, responsible for what they did or did not do that contributed to the incident,” he said.

As part of their independent investigation, Davis said his firm will focus on the actions of Mullen Trucking L.P. of Alberta, Canada, and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the WSDOT have launched separate investigations into the collapse.

Davis said Dan Sligh sustained head, shoulder, neck and back injuries when the truck he and his wife were in plunged into the river. Sally Sligh, Davis said, was knocked unconscious from a head injury and suffered internal bleeding.
