Report: Seahawks to sign DE Patrick Chukwurah

Leave it to John Schneider, Pete Carroll and the Seahawks to pass up on a big in favor of a relative unknown.

That's apparently what they'll do to fill Chris Clemons' roster spot. The NFL's website is reporting the Seahawks will sign Patrick Chukwurah after he beat out fellow free-agent defensive ends Ray Edwards, Aaron Maybin and Travis LaBoy in a tryout.

Chukwurah, 33, hasn't appeared in a regular-season NFL game since 2007 with the Buccaneers. He has nine sacks in seven NFL seasons, including a career-high 4.5 with the Broncos in 2006. Chukwuruh spent two seasons in the UFL, leading the league in sacks both seasons.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Chukwuruh has been working as a personal trainer.

Clemons sustained a torn ACL and meniscus in Sunday's win over Washington. Rookie Bruce Irvin is expected to assume Clemons' spot at weakside defensive end when Seattle takes on Atlanta in the divisional round. Chukwuruh could see time as a situational pass rusher, Irvin's previous role.

JS has been pretty good at this stuff but wow. 33 yr old guy who hasn't played in four years? I don't get it but in JS I trust.

Watching the Seahawks moves is kinda like watching the movie "The Replacements" I sometimes wonder if instead of watching the waiver wire, JS follows the parole board hearings looking for good players that fell out of favor, learned their lesson and are now read to seriously apply the talent they took for granted the first time around. If Longwell had a beer gut and smoked cigs on the sidelines it would be perfect! Good luck Patrick, make the most of your new opportunity, sack a qb and get rich!

Even though brain trust has done a great job in finding lower draft talent, I wouldn't put too much faith in this pick up. This was about getting the "best" player from a incredible small available list to fill a gap. There is a reason these guys weren't on a team already. Coming in off the street to contribute to a playoff team in Jan is an expectation that no one could meet.

The Key phrase in this article is "Beat out". He out shined the named guys and made the most of the tryout...I am going to be pulling for this guy to get like 5 Sacks in a game..and JS and PC can laugh all the way to the SB...Isn't this the same guy that was Puking on the field with his helmet on a few years ago? If So I Love it !! More unknowns to make up the land of Misfit NFL Players a Championship team.Hey patrick wanna SB Ring? Come play a few playoff games, sack the QB a Little and go to the SB. has to be a big deal for this guy. Im pulling for him..GO HAWKS!!

Leave it to John Schneider to find a former player who he knows about & feels he can still play & LOVES football. If he BEAT OUT the other candidates, what does that say about them? The dude must stay in & be in excellent condition. A personal trainer stays in shape 24-7.If I was a player that's been playing and got beat out by a guy who's been away from the game that long. They need to retire.John may have done it again.....

about how far we have come, when your coach and GM pull another bone head stunt and the whole city loves them for it, instead of calling for their firing. Another visit to the second hand store, another find of a rare treasure. USC fan here, who became a Hawk fan when Pete was hired. I had to put up with a lot of crap for a couple of years, but finally, the bandwagon is filling up Go Hawks...!!

It's not such a leap of faith when the guy beats out 3 others in a tryout. Always compete-how can you not like it? Longwell is a Seattle native and Chukwurah is a workout guru. He also has fresh legs and 7 years of NFL experience. I believe.
