Brock Huard weighs in on whether defensive back Charles Woodson would make sense for the Seahawks.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider was part of the Packers' front office when Green Bay signed free-agent defensive back Charles Woodson back in 2006.

That connection is worth noting now that Woodson is again a free agent and Schneider's Seahawks could be looking to add to their secondary.

Woodson was released Friday by the cash-strapped Packers, who apparently couldn't stomach the idea of paying $9 million next season to a player with advancing age and diminishing durability. Woodson missed nine games last season due to a broken collarbone. But even at 36, the consensus is that he could still help a team, perhaps in a part-time role.

"To me, he's a 20-play player anymore. He's going to give you 20 good ones," ESPN's Herm Edwards told "Brock and Salk" on Friday.

Edwards, a former NFL defensive back himself, thinks Woodson is best suited at this stage of his career to be a nickelback. He moved from cornerback to safety last season.

"I think he's an inside guy. You don't want to put him outside anymore," Edwards said. "You'll want to put him in there and let him play some safety, you blitz him some, he's going to cover the tight end, those are the things he's going to do. He's got great instincts and awareness, and he's got good leadership qualities."

Marcus Trufant, Seattle's primary nickelback last season, will be a free agent. Younger cornerbacks Jeremy Lane and Byron Maxwell also saw time in that role last season.

There certainly is no denying that.
BUT... given his progressing age... and injuries, I would really feel that it would be a poor move to sign him in any capacity.

Sure, it would give us a "big name" for the roster, but I honestly feel that we would get much more out of trying to get a hold of a developing prospect rather than to cling to a player of "former" glory.

Woodson would be so valuable as a mentor and leader to one of the best defensive backfields in the league. He's a Super Bowl champion with a vast amount of knowledge and a future Hall of Famer. When a team like the Hawks are thinking about this being there year to win a Super Bowl guys like Woodson are so valuable, they've been there done that, plus maybe he could teach Richard Sherman class and humility, its only his 2nd year and his act around the league is getting old, take the his yapping up Roddy White last week, who need's that crap. We had Atari Bigby and Lawyer Milloy for some veteran presence and niether were as good as Woodson is right now. Big mistake not to sign a guy like Woodson who is motivated to be here in a year his leadership could be the diference. Remember the last 2 plays vs Atlanta, a guy like Woodson would have calmed that huddle down and probably things would have been diffrent. Just a thought.

First, We have the best secondary in the NFL, do you really think we need a veteran leader on a squad that's already the best in the NFL? Second, Richard Sherman doesn't need to be taught "Class and humility" He's a trash talking corner, get over it, No matter how you feel about how the game should be played, this is how Sherman plays it, he's not even disrespectful, he just louder with his trash talk than other guys... they're always talkin crap on the field, Sherman just brings it to the media too. Either way, again, this is how he plays the game, so get used to it... Last but not least, The Atlanta game, the problem was pass rush... we didn't pressure Ryan at all he threw two passes without having to worry about the pass rush... when you have recievers like that, they'll get open if you give them enough time.

Respected for what he did when he was good, a little over two seasons ago. Don't tell that to Tramon Williams though. Yeah, Woodson's a proven player, but again, this is highly relative to his performance of season's past. He's not a big name anymore. Please stop calling him that. Any of the other teams in this division are not going to sweat over Charles Woodson landing on Seattle's roster; to the contrary, they will be looking for ways to exploit his liability come gameday.

The team is kind of chock full of cornerbacks. Maybe they could bring him on for the right price, but I have no problem with Lane or Maxwell stepping into that role and some other team will probably give Woodson a better offer than Schneider will.

Seattle may be able to sign him for just above the league minimum if Woodson is serious about coming to a contender. If so, then i'm all for it.

then the guy I'd like to see Seattle strongly consider is Pittsbugh's James Harrison. The Steelers are basically in a corner with Harrison; they want him to restructure his deal, and he won't do that. He might be something of a scheme misfit here, but I wonder if he might not be a nice addition as situational pass rusher, possibly even compete at will LB? I know lots of fans hate the way he plays the game, but I'd absolutely love to have his presence with this team if only for one year. This is a very young team and a guy like Harrison could really be instrumental in getting just that much more out of certain players on this team. I've seen Charles Woodson play over the last two years and it's fairly sad the way his game has deteriorated. There's no place for him here. This secondary is young, but players like Sherman, Kam, and Thomas are a little ahead of their time. I don't think there would be much that uncle Charles could pass on to them.

John Clayton doesn't think Woodson is coming here. Woodson still thinks he can play S at possibly Ravens if Reed leaves there. I would love to have him here at a decent price. I don't have a level of confidence in Maxwell and Lane. $3 mill/yr 2 yrs would be fine.
