How about Dwight Freeney as a short-term fix?

Defensive end Raheem Brock collected 14 sacks (including playoffs) during his two seasons with the Seahawks. He was 32 years old when he joined Seattle on a one-year deal in 2010.

Brock was a short-term solution for the Seahawks, who had yet to draft Bruce Irvin to play opposite Chris Clemons.

With Clemons likely to miss the start of next season while recovering from a torn ACL, the Seahawks have some younger options to consider as they look to help their exterior pass rush this offseason. Free agent Paul Kruger is one of them. They could also find their guy via the draft.

Another option is a veteran who could provide short-term help like Brock did in 2010 and 2011. That's where Dwight Freeney enters the discussion. Freeney just turned 33. He was informed by the Colts last week that he will not be re-signed, meaning he'll become an unrestricted free agent.

I think Dwight Freeney would be an ideal short-term fit for the seahawks. There is a good chance the Hawks probably will sign a free agent defensive end for the short-term. Freeney would be ideal. Even if the Hawks sign Freeney or Vanden Bosch or Pace, or whoever they sign, I would still look to the draft. If you are going to make a Super Bowl run you have to have depth at the defensive line position. Look what happened in the Atlanta game without Clemons. The pass rush was a no show. Back in the days of Bill Walsh the 49ers were always 8 or 9 deep along the defensive line, when they made a Super Bowl run.

Mark Schlereth on Freeney

Last night when I was watching NFL live, Schlereth was buzzing about Freeney. Schlereth could not say enough good things about Freeney. According to Schlereth, Freeney is still a great player. Schlereth was raving about Freeney's swim move. Watching Freeney's spin move was just plain amazing. Freeney still has elite speed. Freeney knows how to use his speed to create leverage. Freeney brings it on every play. BTW: Freeney got a text message from Payton Manning inviting Freeney to become a member of the Broncos. Not only would Freeney help the Seahawks in general. I think Bruce Irvin would really benefit from having Freeney on the Seahawks. Bruce Irvin could learn alot from Freeney. Just listening to Freeney you know the guy is a gamer. Freeney brings his lunch pale everyday. Freeney was also told that he was so small to play defensive end. Now doesn't that ring a bell. Do you know someone else who was told he was too small to play? Freeney would be ideal some where between 15-25 snaps per game.

Sammie Lee Hill

This was posted from Dave Van Wie from the Bleacher report. Detroit Lions DT Sammie Lee Hill showed some flashes in 2012 that he can be a force to be reckoned with. Hill wasn't credited with any sacks in the 2012 season, but he was credited with 17 quarterback hurries. To come up with that many hurries from a defensive tackle spot means that you are generating strong pass rush up the middle, which is something that many teams could benefit from. In addition to the hurries, Hill also deflected three passes last year, further proof that he can make an impact. He probably won't cost a ton, but Hill is a sleeper to keep an eye out for.

Let's See Who Is Available

I'd like to see them take a look at all available free agents, have them try out in some drills, take a look at their medical history, consider their age and games played, before they take someone. My preference is that they get a DE in the draft who can play some downs this year and be a strong pass rusher. Bob Lilly was not as big as the guys are now, but he had a natural talent for splitting blockers and sacking the QB. My point is that this is a talent you don't train, you find it naturally occurring. Freeney is a temporary fix but I don't think he gives them anything they don't already have.

No one said that Freeney is the long-term solution. Remember no one knows for sure when Chris Clemons will be back. The Hawks could sign Freeney and still draft a defensive end early in the draft. The Hawks have put themselves into a situation(because of their salary cap number) where they have flexibilty. The Hawks can do whatever they want in both free agency and the NFL Draft. Teams like the Jets, Cowboys, Giants, Ravens and Steelers are in the process of cutting good players to get under the salary cap. The Seahawks are going to have plenty of options in free agency. Their is going to be a lot of defensive ends and defensive tackles available on the market in free agency.
