Joe Theismann: Seahawks should stand pat at QB
A few months ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Seahawks would spend their first-round pick in April's draft on a quarterback.
They passed on doing so the previous three drafts despite having four first-round picks and long-term uncertainty at the position. Surely, this would be the year they finally pulled the trigger on a quarterback, right?
Not necessarily. The Seahawks' draft position -- they'll pick either 11th or 12th -- and a suddenly weakened pool of available quarterbacks could force the Seahawks to address other needs with their first pick.
That's a move that Joe Theismann endorses. Theismann, a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who is now an analyst for the NFL Network, told "Brock and Salk" on Monday that he thinks the Seahawks would be wise to hold off their search for a franchise quarterback for another year.
"I think you make a huge mistake when you go and roll the dice and go after an inexperienced rookie quarterback who's going to have to grow. Don't expect an Andy Dalton-type performance next year," Theismann said, referring to the Bengals' quarterback who had an impressive rookie season.
Tarvaris Jackson threw 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions with a 79.2 rating last season, his first with the Seahawks after signing a two-year deal. Theismann noted Jackson's leadership while suggesting that his injured pectoral muscle negatively affected his play.
Acquiring a quarterback via free agency or a trade are also options for the Seahawks, but Theismann isn't sold on those, either.
Theismann said the Cardinals "reached an awful lot" when they traded for quarterback Kevin Kolb and signed him to a lucrative deal last offseason. He said he thinks Green Bay's Matt Flynn is a better quarterback than Kolb, but that the Seahawks should stick with Jackson for another year.
Brock and Salk explain why they disagree with Theismann in Monday's Wrap Up video.
