Was Browner's 2011 season as good as we thought?

Brandon Browner intercepted six passes, returned two for touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement last season, his first in the NFL.

The Seahawks' cornerback was also among the league leaders in penalties and at times was exposed by smaller, quicker receivers.

The latter was part of ESPN analyst KC Joyner's basis for including Browner on his list of the NFC's seven most overrated players from last season.

Joyner: "Browner made the Pro Bowl on the strength of his six interceptions, but he had abysmal coverage metrics and was a penalty machine. He was terrible against short passes (6.7 YPA, ranked 72nd), vertical passes (11.3 VYPA, ranked 63rd) and stretch vertical passes (14.8 SVYPA, ranked 66th).

"Plus, one of his interception returns for a touchdown was a gift, due more to the highly inaccurate arm of Bears quarterback Caleb Hanie than any action on Browner's part. All Browner did was drop back into zone coverage and catch a pass that was thrown right to him."

Home town media voicing negative "Opinions" about our guys. Brandon is a one of a kind dominating defensive player. Not just 6 picks, 2 pick-6 but LED the NFL in passes defended with 23. He get's penalized because he is a mauler of a CB.So what. The Cards had to move Fitz to the slot to get him off the line.That's great stuff.Besides he was a rookie for goodness sake and went to the pro-bowl.What else do you guys want from the man ?

He's such a gift giver to the whole Seahawk team. Wow what a great defender. Pro Bowl you bet!.Underated thats ok. The seahawk fans feel differnt, he's a Gifted player.

KC Joyner is overrated, way more than Browner. Browner was a rookie and is still learning his craft, can Joyner claim the same? Browner went to the PB on his individual merits, Joyner did what?

I think out of the 4 Talented DBs that we have in (Sherman, Browner, Chancellor, and Thomas) I would have to say that Browner is the weaker link, he has the lower potential than the others! Browner has got major ball hawking abilities, he makes great plays on the ball when its in the air, hes super physical, however his weakness is his covering skills (hes not the fastest corner out there as was demonstrated how he got burned over and over again by Mike Wallace when we played the Steelers in week 2! However I think hes an above average DB hes not terrible, I think with the other three guys they have hes very servicable! i just think that as the overall talent on the roster continues to improve I think that PC is eventually going to want that elite CB to pair with Sherman!

Mike Wallace has burned a whole bunch of people in the NFL, he is only the fastest person in the NFL.

Coverage skills are great, but if you can't make a play with the ball in the air your kind of an useless cornerback, I will take a physical, ball hawking and ESPECIALLY gifted player with the ball in the air (most importan skill to me) than a exception cover corner who can't make a play once the pass is thrown.

He led the NFL in Passes defended which means he made more plays once the pass was thrown than anybody in the NFL.

Solid corner, but he isn't as good as some people think and perhaps that will improve this season. For all his INT's and passes defensed, he gave up a ton of big plays and was constantly beaten by speedier receivers. Richard Sherman, on the other hand, has the chance to be a real stud.

Thanks, I enjoyed watching that clip, I love Browner no matter what anybody has to say, I am not surprised by his success, I called his success earlier in the season before anybody knew who he was, he is the reason kelly jennings was sent packing and Marcus Trufant was released.

Receiver's don't like the kind of physicality that he displays and his ball skills are second to none and the icing on the cake is his run support which most cornerback's don't even care to partake in.

This is east coast bias. Browner played great, if these guys need evidence of his play just watch the eagles game from last year. You know if Browner played for the Pats, Giants, Cowboys or Eagles they would be calling him one of the best corners in the league instead of overrated. Browner is loved in seattle and thats all that matters!

respect a physical style of play within the first 5 yards from scrimmage. They need to accrue strong offensive penalties EVERY game leading up to the Super Bowl. Sherman and Browner need to school the officials into understanding that football is a physical game, within the confines of the rules.
It has been my contention during numerous live gameday chats over the course of the last two seasons, that the Seahawks defense lacked the ability to knock a WR on their butt before the play begins to develop. Challenge the WR's at the line, as it were.
WE NOW POSSESS THAT CAPABILITY. Look Out Opponents!
Kelly Jennings was WRETCHED at this position!
I surmise that both Sherman and Browner will deserve Pro Bowl Honors next year.

Defense

You can look at ProFootballFocus's stats to see how well SEA's defense did last season by how well they did at defending the run (7th of 32 teams), defending the pass (2nd - to BAL), by their pass rush (20th), and by their defensive penalties (28th). DAL, DET, SD & OAK all had more defensive penalties, but SEA's youths have to learn how to play physically without drawing the laundry. SF was 1st at run-D, 2nd at pass rush, 4th in coverage, and 16th in D-penalties. SF was 1st overall in team defense, while SEA was 5th. When SEA's pass-rush improves this season, so should the rest of their defensive stats - depending on how well their pass-rush improves. Improved pass-rush will also be helped by better QB production in the 1st and last drives of the 1st half. The sooner SEA's offense can run up a score on their opponents, the better their run-defense stats will improve also. Looking forward to some really good defense from my Seahawks this season. GO HAWKS!

of the 197 CBs who played at least one snap at the position last season, Brandon Browner (196th) was behind OAK's Stanford Routt (197th) in getting penalties, but Sherman Smith ranked 193rd (pretty close) [Thurmond ranked 40th and Tru 81st]. Against the run Browner ranked 17th and Sherman 25th [Thurmond ranked 130th and Tru 80th]. In coverage Browner ranked 10th and Sherman 4th [Thurmond ranked 59th and Tru 158th]. SEA's CBs were ineffective at rushing the passer (if they ever did).
