Silverdale man arrested twice in 24 hours for DUI

Apr 12, 2013, 3:37 PM | Updated: 4:24 pm

Police say a Silverdale man was arrested for driving under the influence twice in a 24 hour time period.

The man was stopped April 5 in rural Kitsap County for almost hitting several drivers. His blood alcohol content was 0.26, too high to be booked into jail. He was taken to the hospital.

After the suspect was released, police say he got his car out of impound and was back on the road where he allegedly caused two crashes in Bremerton on April 6.

“It was the same individual. Again, he gave the appearance of being under the influence,” Kitsap County Deputy Scott Wilson told KIRO Radio.

According to the Kitsap Sun, Kitsap County prosecutors have charged Joseph Edward Yedinak with DUI and Bremerton city prosecutors have charged him with DUI and reckless driving.

Yedinak’s total bail is now $150,000. The Sun reports he was previously charged with DUI in 2009 and 1992.

Wilson said that even if Yedinak was booked into jail on the first arrest, he still could have gotten behind the wheel drunk the next day.

“If he had been able to post bail, then this whole process could have occurred almost in an identical fashion,” Wilson said. “He would have waited the 12 hours, got his car out of impound, gone to obtain more alcohol from wherever, and probably would have committed the same type of driving offenses.”

A listener to KIRO Radio’s Ron and Don Show wanted to know why every car isn’t outfitted with an ignition interlock system to help prevent multiple DUI offenses.

While he takes drunk driving seriously, Ron said that might be infringing on people’s rights.

“Treating everyone as suspect is overkill. If you use that logic, you can take that to absurd lengths in every corner of our lives,” he said.

Ron’s solution is to outfit cars with interlock device for alcoholics who’ve proven they need intervention before getting behind the wheel.
