Thousands are expected to rally in Washington D.C. Wednesday afternoon to speed up the debate over immigration reform. Hundreds are expected for a similar rally in downtown Seattle.
There are rallies planned across the country in support of major immigration reform plans being put together in Congress. Those attending are hoping to move the debate along with their action.
A group of senators has been working on a plan that would give legal status to the 11 million illegal immigrants now living in the U.S. But a vote on the plan is more than a month away.
Activists like Juan Jose Bocanegro believe that isn’t fast enough. He’s organizing a rally outside the Seattle federal building Wednesday afternoon.
“We’re trying to make sure that the voice of the community is heard,” says Bocanegro.
He says it’s time for Congress to stop the deportations of people who came here as children because their parents were looking for work.
“Kids have been deported that are 18, 19 years old that have been here since they were 3 or 2 years of age, so this has a real devastating effect on people,” says Bocanegro.
