Pundits who doubted Seahawks sounded like Karl Rove on Election Night

Who was that guy who told me about Drew Brees being way more experienced than Russell Wilson? Oh yes, that was Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, but him talking up New Orleans must have been a part of his strategy. (AP Photo/Scott Eklund)

After the Seahawks dominant 34 to 7 win over the Saints, many of you did what I did.

Yes, you put on a favorite silk robe embroidered with the number 12, poured a 21-year-old aged cognac (Frapin Chateau Fontpinot XO), pulled out your favorite bunny slippers and sat by a roaring fire with your Yorkshire Terrier basking in the glow of this glorious win while listening to Dave Wyman on the post game show on KIRO Radio.

“All I could think during that game was – what is the rest of the league thinking when a team as good as New Orleans is […] there were a few pundits around the country that were saying New Orleans is the best team,” said Wyman.

By “a few pundits” you must mean former Seahawks QB Trent Dilfer who was on 710 ESPN with Brock and Danny saying stuff like, “The match-ups are much more in the Saints’ favor tonight.”

That reminds me a little of Karl Rove on Election Night arguing that it was too early to call Ohio for Obama, remember?

“You have to be careful about calling things when we have, like 991 votes separating the two candidates and a quarter of the vote yet to count,” said Rove. “If they had made it on the basis of select precincts, I’d be very careful about intruding in this process.”

“That’s awkward.”

This is important to me because since August, as many of you know, I’ve been taking a daily on-air course in how to BS about football, which basically involves me parroting everything I hear the 710 ESPN guys talk about. So when they get it wrong, it makes me sound even less informed than usual when we are poo-poohing the stats that New Orleans loses games on cold days, or reminders that we have a short quarterback who’s only in his second year.

Speaking of which — who was that guy who told me about Drew Brees being way more experienced than Russell Wilson?

Oh yes, that was Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, “He’s in such tremendous command of the game – in the way he sees things and the great benefit that he has is that he’s played so long that you can’t fool him. He’s going to be right most of the time with his decisions. They just produce big numbers.”

Yeah, big numbers…for the other team! Well, I guess that’s just part of the coach’s strategy of deliberately over-estimating your opponent to make him over-confident, but I swallowed it completely.

As for Trent Dilfer, during the game he was smart enough to go to Twitter to plead for forgiveness.

He added:

It’s OK Trent, sometimes even I get a game prediction wrong. Although, since I’m always quoting someone like you, it’s never my fault.

The Seahawks travel to San Francisco to take on the evil 49ers Sunday and that is obviously a must-win game because the 49ers are angry and big, and we have a short quarterback who’s only in his second year.

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?
