Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick wants to replace Aaron Reardon as the next county executive.

Lovick said he wants to bring some healing and leadership to the county, after 18 months of controversy surrounding Executive Reardon.

As soon as Reardon announced his resignation Thursday, Lovick said the decision to move up the county ladder wasn’t difficult. “I love being sheriff, but I also love living in this county,” he said. “It’s a wonderful place to live, to raise a family and to grow.”

Lovick spent the weekend telling the Snohomish County Democrats that he wanted to be considered. They will select three names to give the county council to consider for the job. “I believe I will be in the top three,” said Lovick. “I will be speaking with all of the council members, explaining what I hope to do and I believe I will be the next county executive.”

Lovick, 61, has been sheriff for five years. He spent nine years in the legislature and 33 years in the Washington State Patrol.

Because Executive Reardon’s resignation takes effect after May 17, a Democrat is assured of staying in office until a special election next year. Had Reardon resigned before May 17, the next executive would have been decided by the voters this year.
